New Videos

Scroll down to see video of Jim Hightower's speech at our JJ dinner!

Dick Cheney correctly predicted the mess in Iraq as shown in this video.

Under the Environmental Issues menu, in the Global Warming item, are 2 new videos; a recent talk Al Gore presented on Global Warming political issues; and a video map of US CO2 emissions. They are worth a look!

Welcome to the La Plata County Democrats web site. We are trying to make the world, and our corner of it, a better place for all - and we are determined to have a good time while at it! Check out our Events Calendar and come join in the fun.

Main Street Office

Our La Plata County Democratic Party Headquarters, "the HQ Office", is up and running at 1021 Main Ave. in Durango. Stop by and visit.

The main phone to the HQ Office is 970-828-1166.

The Regional Director for the Colorado Democratic Party Coordinated Campaign (support for all Colorado Democratic candidates) is Mike Kenney. Mike is now stationed full time in Durango and is at his desk in the HQ Office much of the time. He can be reached at mike.kenney@forwardcolorado.com or at 719-947-5434.

The State Convention

(5/17) Whew! I am hoarse after all that cheering. What a fired up crowd and what energy! There were aggravations, particularly with the voting process - and leaving some of our preferred National Convention Delegates off of the ballot! But considering the crowd (~7,000?), I guess the State Dems organizing committee did OK.

The flashiest event had to be the well staged entrance of Mark Udall. The nominations for him, the video played to introduce him, his handshaking entry from back of the floor area to the stage - probably took half an hour - but the crowd loved it.

Lots of great talks - Governor Bill Ritter, Senator Ken Salazar, Congressman John Salazar, etc. etc.

The special "guests" that were coming to talk about Clinton, then Obama generated lots of fun rumors. Did some see secret service? Helicopters? Maybe Michele Obama? Heck, maybe Barack. Is Bill Clinton really going to be here? etc. etc.

It turned out that Terry McAuliffe, former Democratic National Committee chairman, and current chairman of the Clinton campaign, appeared for Hillary. He gave a great speech and had everyone fired up. (Keep an eye on this site for him hugging and posing with some La Plata Dems.)

A bit later the mystery guest speaking for the Obama campaign turned out to be Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano! She really got the Obama contingent fired up and the place was rocking.

Here are a few shots to give you a flavor of the event.

Delegates Rally and Deck Party

On Friday May 9th, after work (FAC!), about 150 excited Democrats came to a rally to support the Delegates who are going to the State Convention. We celebrated on the new deck of the Alpine Bank building. This was the first event put on by the restarted Citizens For Change.

Ample and excellent side-dishes were provided by various Precinct Captains. Thank you!

A special thanks to Jay Culver for handling the bulk of the food and cooking. Thanks to Sharron Chambers for handling the second grill. Thanks to Jim Callard for making a refreshment run as we were running out. Thanks to Margaret, Jeff, Lea, and Tiare for handling the welcome table. Thanks to Andy and Betsy for the live music! Thanks to Walt, Britt, and Julie for helping organize.

And a special thanks to our friends at Bread for the goodies they provided. They always help us out, so visit them at their bakery at 42 CR 250!
