    • CURRENT NEWS
    • Culture change and process changes are hard work. It took me three years to transform the LPC Treasurer’s Office: rocket speed for changes of this magnitude in an office that runs on an annual calendar! From “paper and pencil” only, to high tech accounting software, with skilled accountants doing the work!

    • By the beginning of my 3rd year (one year ago), I had achieved the following results:
    • Since the end of the first quarter of my third year, the office has been running smoothly, with no errors, no backlog, and is in compete compliance with applicable laws for the office, due to having a highly skilled and trained staff.
    • Hired a team of 4 individuals of which all people have the right expertise to do their jobs. Three do the work of the Treasurer’s Office; one does Public Trustee work. According to the County auditors last year, this is the minimum required to implement appropriate accounting controls. (The office was understaffed by one employee the first quarter of 2017 and for most of 2015).
    • This team has the most effective internal controls of all County Treasurer Offices in the state, per current auditor of La Plata County, after reviewing my office in Oct 2017.
    • Transactions take seconds to process, not minutes, eliminating backlog, overtime, and the need for additional staff. (Staffing levels have not increased in this office since the early 1980’s).
    • This treasurer’s office is the most productive in the state now – processing 50% – 100+% more transactions per person than any other treasurer’s office in Colorado!
    • Customer service has increased by allowing taxpayers many ways to pay (no-fee e-checks, debit cards, credit cards, etc.). Prior to my tenure, customers could only pay by check or cash.
    • I have been transparent with the County Commissioners about what was going on in my office during the 3 years I have been in office, and updating them on the progress, including asking for help when I needed it.
    • Accounting expertise is a must when managing a team of accountants and reviewing the quality of their work.
    • I hope you will support me in the caucus and tell the story of the amazing transformation this office has gone through in the last three years. I campaigned four years ago that I would do just this, and I kept my promise.

    • My campaign for La Plata County Treasurer is off to a great start, and I look forward to seeing everyone at Assembly on March 17. I ask for your vote at Assembly so that I advance to the Primary. I am a good candidate for several reasons.
    • I am very organized. Running one of the largest nonprofit organizations in Southwest Colorado (United Way) for 10 years, on a shoestring budget, and with a very small staff, requires a high level of organization.
    • I can create policies and procedures to comply with state statutes, evidenced by my work at the Durango Business Improvement District (BID) over the past five years. Many people do not realize that BID is a unit of local government, subject to all the same open records and transparency rules as our County. State statutes define what a BID can do, and what is legal requirements are. BID is in full compliance with Department of Local Affairs and the City of Durango.
    • I can motivate a small staff to do a lot of work and retain employees. While at our local United Way and BID, we served a broad set of nonprofit organizations and businesses. At United Way, we worked for all five counties in Southwest Colorado. At BID, we work for 400 property owners and close to 1,000 businesses. All were served well, and done so with a small, loyal staff.
    • I can collaborate with others necessary for efficient and effective County operations. At United Way, we collaborated with local governments, school districts, nonprofit organizations, and businesses to solve community problems. At BID, we collaborate regularly with the Chamber of Commerce, Local First, Economic Development Alliance, Durango Area Tourism Office, City of Durango, La Plata County, and more. Collaboration allows an organization to accomplish its tasks effectively and efficiently.
    • I am a public servant. I have always worked in jobs that serve the community. The County Treasurer position is a way to further my service. I am concerned about how the job has been done as of late, and want to make things better.

    • During his first term in office, Sheriff Smith restructured the Sheriff’s Office and streamlined operations to provide more efficient delivery of service to the citizens of La Plata County.

    • Sheriff Smith continued the investigation in the disappearance and death of Dylan Redwine, which led to charges being filed and the arrest of Mark Redwine

    • In response to the financial crisis La Plata County is facing and sound fiscal practices, the Sheriff’s Office has increased productivity and modernized equipment while underspending its allocated budget by approximately two million dollars and generating an additional three quarters of a million dollars in new revenue over the past three years.

    • CURRENT NEWS
    • The brave actions of the students from Parkland have reinforced my long-standing commitment to gun safety. I’m the only candidate in this race to have stood up to the NRA. In 2013, I proudly voted in the Colorado House for background checks and limits on magazine capacity, and as a result the NRA attacked me with newspaper and email smear campaigns. Their attempts to silence me in 2014 and in 2016 failed and I am not afraid to stand up to them in this election.
    • Endorsement Update: I’m thrilled and honored to announce that the Gunnison Political Revolution has endorsed me to be our nominee for CD3. They know I will fight for progressive change in Washington.
    • Why I’m Running: I’m running for Congress to build a more just, equitable, sustainable, and prosperous future for ALL.
    • Real Experience, Real Solutions: Living Wage Jobs: I cosponsored a series of bills on workforce training, incentives for new manufacturing, and opportunities for veterans.
    • Water Projects: I have funded needed water projects to keep Western Slope water in the basin of origin and helped bring people together for our 2015 Colorado Water Plan.
    • Infrastructure: I have passed bills that connect communities through expanding rural broadband and investing in multimodal transportation: roads, bridges, airports, transit, and pedestrian/bike paths.
    • Health Care: I have worked with businesses, non-profits, and local governments on bills to combat the outrageously high insurance premiums we in CD3 pay: making costs transparent, working towards a single state-wide risk rating pool, supported the expansion of Medicaid.
    • Public Education: I have sponsored and passed a bipartisan bill to expand options for local school districts to fund public education.
    • Recognition: I have received a 100% score card in the State House from human rights, environmental, workers’ rights, agricultural, immigration rights, public education, health & mental health, outdoor industry, and local business groups.
    • Path To Victory: I have already built a broad coalition of support in our district. Ranchers, farmers, industrial workers, and truckers who traditionally vote Republican support my work and have honored me for it. I appeal across our entire ideological and economic spectrum. I am undefeated in 5 elections. I know how to build trust and run effective campaigns in rural areas where Dems are not the majority.
    • Right now we are not being represented. I’m running to change that. I would be honored to have your support.

    • WHO IS KARL?
    • Karl grew up on his family’s ranch, was a first-generation college student, and spent four years as a Park Ranger in North Park before starting his successful water law practice in Glenwood Springs. He has spent the last two decades working with municipalities across the 3rd Congressional District to develop healthy, livable and economically prosperous futures.
    • KARL’S PRIORITIES: Preserve, Protect, Grow
    • Healthcare: Universal healthcare is the goal, and we need to bring healthcare costs down now. Requiring transparency from providers, creating a single statewide rating pool, and growing competition by expanding Medicaid in monopolized counties are immediate steps we can take to bring costs down.
    • Taking Real Action to fight the Opioid Epidemic: Right now, it’s cheaper to get hooked than to get treatment for addiction, and only clinics can prescribe treatment. We must lower treatment costs with legislation and increase access to treatment by allowing doctors to prescribe treatment.

    • 80% of Colorado’s public lands are in the 3rd District: Our public lands are crucial to our shared economic success. Karl has spent his career fighting to secure our water rights and he will fight to protect our way of life and our most critical economic asset.

    • Last bastion:For the last year, politicians in Utah, Montana, and Wyoming have sold off their public lands. Now Secretary Zinke has Colorado’s 3rd in his sights. Colorado and the West need a real advocate in congress who knows how to fight back to protect our land.

    • Public Lands: Protecting our lands and supporting our outdoor recreation industry are crucial to our economic success and moving away from the Boom and Bust cycles. Karl has spent over 20 years helping communities create diverse and stable economies.

    • Renewable Energy:Market forces, not regulation, are responsible for the shift to renewable energy. By supporting astronomical solar tariffs, Tipton is actively fighting the only chance displaced workers must return to work and support their families.

    • Municipal Infrastructure funding:Karl has been fighting for municipal infrastructure funding for two decades and will bring the support from the federal government that we have been missing for the last seven years. Our counties and municipalities need federal support for infrastructure projects, transportation, water treatment systems, and broadband to help grow their economies and create healthy, livable communities that can offer opportunities for our children.

    • CURRENT NEWS
    • February 22, 2018 – Root Routledge – Candidate for 2018 Colorado Congressional District 3 seat currently held by Republican Scott Tipton. Root Routledge has filed with the FEC to run for Congress. He made his public announcement the same day at Durango’s Green Drinks meeting at Carver’s, Thursday, February 22, with about 40 people present.
    • His press release announcement went out to all 19 CD3 newspapers and the Denver Post on February 27th, accompanied with an op-ed titled “A Viable Future for America”. The The Durango Herald and Alamosa Valley Courier ran the release that day. Root’s announcement letter was sent out March 3, 2018.
    • Please check out his campaign website www.RootForCitizenCongressman.org to learn more about how Root intends, as our U.S. Representative, to focus not only on protecting the Colorado we love and our rural needs; but to address strategic threats to the health and future viability of our country.
    • Root is a Westerner who grew up in a machine shop environment and was a UAW mechanic on the Kenworth Trucks assembly line. He has owned horses and gathered cattle on horseback; and he has collected range plant data in western and eastern Colorado for grazing impact studies. He loves rural Colorado.
    • As a Vietnam Veteran, with a PhD in Industrial Engineering, Root points out that there are already lots of experienced politicians, legislators, and lawyers in Washington (maybe enough of that professional expertise); but apparently not many problem solvers. We don’t need someone who “knows how to legislate” and will “reach across the aisle;” we need someone who will fight for our future and take on the Republican wrecking crew. If you look into Root’s background and his new book website

We are at a turning point in our democracy, and Jena Griswold is running to ensure it remains strong.

    • As Secretary of State, Jena will:
    • Protect every eligible citizen’s right to vote.
    • Increase voter participation by expanding automatic voter registration.
    • Bolster our state’s cybersecurity and guard against foreign interference in our elections. Fight to get dark money out of our politics and increase campaign finance transparency.
    • Ensure redistricting is done fairly.
    • “As Colorado’s next Secretary of State, I will protect our right to vote, secure our elections from foreign interference, fight to get dark money out of politics, and support small businesses and entrepreneurs. Every eligible voter, whether Democrat, Republican, or Unaffiliated, deserves to have a voice in the future of our state.”
    • Jena Griswold has long been passionate about working on behalf of Coloradans. As a voter protection attorney with President Obama’s reelection campaign, Jena worked to ensure that Colorado elections were accessible to all eligible voters. She continued to serve her home state as Director of the Colorado Governor’s Washington, D.C. Office, where she helped secure federal disaster recovery funding to help the state recover from the devastating 2013 flood.
    • She then opened her own practice. In July 2017, just as President Trump’s sham Voter Commission started to collect data on Colorado voters, Jena announced her candidacy to become Colorado’s next Secretary of State. Jena grew up in Estes Park and now lives in Louisville.

    • January 2018 – Phillip Villard connects with entrepreneurs and small business owners. ”MONEY was the hot topic” Phillip demonstrated his understanding of small businesses and their needs, whether it’s the importance of crafting a compelling elevator pitch, creating products that speaks for themselves, or hiring your first employee.” Phillip heard the many hot buttons and challenges facing both small business leaders and investors, with one key issue being the harm to the business/investor relationship when convertible notes are taxed. With the dramatic increase of investors seeking companies that promote sustainability, the environment, and social impact on our economy, Phillip believes in the B Corp philosophy for small business.
    • February 2018: Phillip Villard announces he supports Unions, Community Churches, and Disability Organizations. For most of his adult life, Phillip Villard has championed the rights of workers, the disabled, and all ordinary citizens wishing to live better lives. Never seeking credit for his work, his fulfillment comes from seeing the victories of union members securing a good living wage with fair labor contracts; community churches connecting with local residents and promoting walking to church on Sunday mornings; and disability organizations who need better transportation and accessibility to their daily resources..
    • March 2018: On the way to an event, Phillip overcame hardship. When Phillip Villard launched his campaign for Colorado Secretary of State, he vowed to persevere through the challenges he would inevitably encounter. His resolve would soon be tested when his transmission failed on the way to an extremely important campaign event. A potentially crippling blow, Phillip saw it as an opportunity to empathize with the transportation hardships facing so many other Americans, like the disabled, elderly, and youth communities.
    • His empathy fueled his now regular practice of helping such individuals and groups with their transportation needs. While life presents disappointments, fear, and hardship, Phillip is a living and breathing example that we always have a choice to adjust our thinking, remain committed to our plan of action, and discover pearls of wisdom so we continue on our goals towards achieving our dreams.

    • CURRENT NEWS
    • My name is Dave Young, and I just announced my campaign for Colorado State Treasurer. As a Greeley resident and math teacher, I know the challenges Colorado families face. Our state is growing rapidly. But not everyone is sharing in our state’s prosperity. Places like Greeley and rural Colorado where I come from continue to struggle. I am running for Treasurer because I believe we need to put Colorado on better financial footing, where prosperity from our growth is shared.
    • I have been a state representative since July 2011, representing east Greeley, Evans and Garden City. Over the past three years, I’ve served as chair of the House Appropriations Committee and as a member of the Joint Budget Committee focusing on solving Colorado’s budget crises.
    • Before my work as a legislator, I was a senior instructor for the Information and Learning Technologies program at the University of Colorado Denver. Prior to that, I was an information architect for a large Web services company. I started my career as a junior high math, science and technology teacher. I’ve lived in Greeley for over 40 years and I’m a native Coloradan.
    • I earned my MA in instructional design from UC Denver in 2000, and my BS in mathematics from Colorado State University in 1975. I’m married to Dr. Mary Young, a school psychologist for Centennial BOCES. My sister, who is developmentally disabled, lives in Pueblo West.
    • I’m committed to public service and community involvement. In addition to being a member of the newly-formed Donor Alliance Foundation Board of Directors, I worked as a trail maintenance volunteer for the Poudre River Trail system.
