Resist.

Our Community needs us.

Executive orders. Proposed budgets. Unlawful use of force. Our communities need us to raise our voices LOUD.

CALL our Congress members everyday. Local numbers and DC.

Congressional phones are burning up right now - 40x what they normally get. Senators get reports about the 3 most-called about topics a day, sorted by zip code and area code.

Two options: Follow the info below OR download the app for 5calls.org. They specialize in following the news and upcoming WORST actions of this administration and have created scripts / background info to use on different issues. Super simple!

If you have specific concerns not related to what 5Calls.org covers, dial directly.

  • Put all the numbers here in your phone for ease of access - say under P for Politician.

  • Mention a personal reason for calling

  • Try to speak with a person; leave a message only as a last resort.

  • Leave your zip code!

  • Be clear on what you want — "I'm disappointed that the Senator..." or "I want to thank the Senator for their vote on... " or "I want the Senator to know that voting in _____ way is the wrong decision for Colorado because...." Don't leave any ambiguity.

  • Be concise.

  • Be nice to the staffer - usually young and totally overwhelmed.

VISIT Durango offices ... but CALL AHEAD! There's typically only one staff person locally, and that person has many many counties to visit weekly. Call and ask for an appointment.

Do not bother with emails or letters! Write LTEs - write the Durango Herald and Telegraph! They track that stuff. Also give them hell - or kudos - on Social Media.

Staying Engaged in Uncertain Times

The last year has been overwhelming. The pace of change is fast, the information is constant, and it’s easy to feel unsure where to focus energy. â€‹ You don’t need to do everything. Start where you are, stay informed, take action when you can, and take care of yourself along the way.

With gratitude, we’re sharing the following resources curated by our friends, Montezuma County Democrats.

Understand What’s Happening

Take Action

  • 5 Calls App – simple scripts and tools for contacting elected officials

  • Attend school board, city council, town board, and county commissioner meetings

  • Get involved with Indivisible (there is a Durango Indivisible Chapter!)

  • Join We Are Worth Fighting For, a broad national coalition

  • Choose an issue you care about and volunteer locally

  • Spend with intention and support local businesses

  • Don't support businesses that donate to fascist causes. Track Political Donations here.

Take Care of Yourself

Sustained engagement requires rest and grounding.

  • Get outside and enjoy the place we live!

  • Listen to your favorite music!

  • Read poetry and words of encouragement.
